Hey everyone! How is your Memorial Day weekend going? Did you do anything exciting?? I didn’t have any special plans for this weekend, but honestly I was really excited for a relaxed, long weekend at home after a month or so of traveling and stress at work.
Something that I’ve really struggled with as a recent graduate working my first, full time job is eating healthily at work. How many other people work in an office where you’re sitting and staring at a computer for (honestly) most of the 8 hours you’re there? I feel like for most people these days, that’s the case. It’s hard to think of many jobs where you don’t need to do everything on the computer! And then on top of this inactivity there’s the fact that coworkers are constantly bringing in baked goods to share, and there are like a million leftover bagels from meetings in the kitchen, and the person in the cube over has a candy jar…man! It’s hard to say no in the face of all of this temptation.
I’m really good at not buying candy and other junk food at the grocery store. I can usually stick very closely to my list (although I do splurge on those little $1 packets of Justin’s almond butter every once in a while 😉 ). So basically my strategy in the past amounted to “Out of sight, out of mind.” However this doesn’t work so well in the office. A donut or muffin is usually like two floors away at most.
Do you guys struggle with this? Please share any tips you have in the comments – I need all the help I can get!
Thankfully, I discovered one way to help combat the office munchies recently – my Mocha Energy Bites! These cute little snack balls are slightly sweet, caffeinated and very satisfying, attributes which really help me stay focused on my goals and work.
I couldn’t wait to share these with you guys. They are lifesavers when you need a mid-afternoon pick me up, or a little bit of chocolate-y sweetness to help you say no to the HoHos in the vending machine. They’re naturally sweetened with dates and honey, and the oatmeal and flax seeds help to keep you full for longer.
I also recently bought my own coffee bean grinder, so I’ve been putting ground coffee in everything. It also really does make a big difference when it comes to the flavor of your coffee, IMO. However you can of course buy pre-ground coffee to make these little guys and they will still be amazing.

1 cup pitted dates (soaked in water for 10 minutes, then drained well)
3 Tbsp nut butter
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 Tbsp flax seed
1/2 cup rolled oats
1-2 Tbsp ground coffee (I used 2 Tbsp, which makes the coffee flavor quite strong! Scale it back if you want a more subtle flavor)
2 tsp honey
- Pulse dates in food processor or blender until they are in small pieces or form a ball.
- Add the rest of the ingredients and pulse until combined. Don’t process too long; you want small pieces, not paste.
- Roll the balls into 1-inch balls.
- Refrigerate overnight for best results (though not necessary). The overnight refrigeration helps the flavors come together and the balls will taste even better.
